Long White Cloud

Part of my process is to work from photographs. I'm probably too impatient to work from sketches so my phone is full of photographs of scenes with varying compositions and qualities of light. This painting is based on a photograph from a recent trip to the south island of New Zealand. I often find that the most interesting and effective photographs are the result of a more random and spontaneous process, such as taking them from the window of a moving car. When I revise my photographs, the ones that have 'the magic' become apparent. The photograph used as a basis for this painting definitely had 'the magic.'
