In 1837 Charles Darwin sketched the first evolutionary tree. This tree has remained central to the idea of evolutionary biology since. The patterns and processes in the history of life can be mapped by this simple sketch. The Painted Honey-eater is perched on an origami crane made from a page depicting Darwin's first evolutionary tree. This species of Honey-eater is currently listed as Vulnerable but its family Meliphagidae have many members including Miners, Chats, Wattlebirds and Friarbirds. A total of 190 species with 50% of that number residing in Australia. With Australia leading the way to extinction will this family of birds be a dead end on that evolutionary tree?
